DANA KANE

The Kelly Girls (1996). Leslie Jones, Curator of Prints and Drawings at LACMA, described the Kelly Girls as “a whimsical tour-de-force.” And Ms. Jones continues: “By dressing her bare-shouldered girls in characteristically flat, hard-edged modernist canvases, Kane confronts the high modernist vision of the world as an essentially disembodied one. Kane’s skirts slice and splice the worlds of high and low, seaming together the once divided histories of cultural production, while subtly calling attention to the gender divide that excluded many women artists from the history of modernism.”
Ms. Kane produced over 30 variations of the “Kelly Girls”. The Series was shown at Pierogi 2000, the Brooklyn Museum, the Islip Museum, as well as California State University, in Fullerton, California. The work was also written about in The New York Times, as well as the Los Angeles Times.
